Eldritch Paintbrush

wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)

Eldritch Paintbrush

This paintbrush is made from the hair of a displacer beast and has a silver handle engraved with strange runes. The paintbrush and it's creations have a faint aura of conjuration magic that can be detected by spells such as detect magic.

Miniature Maker

The paintbrush has 3 charges and regains expended charges daily at dawn. As an action, you can expend a charge and use the paintbrush to start painting a miniature version of any creature you have seen on a flat surface, such as paper, canvas, or wood. The painting must be no larger than 1 inch by 1 inch. You must spend 1 minute of uninterrupted concentration to finish the painting, during which you can do nothing else. If your concentration is broken, the painting is ruined and you must start over. When you finish painting, you must make a Dexterity (Painter's Supplies) check with a DC equal to 10 + the creature’s challenge rating. If you succeed, the creature comes to life as a Tiny construct under your control for 1 hour or until you use the paintbrush again. You can have only one creature animated by the paintbrush at a time.

Pigment of Life

A painted creature has the same appearance and abilities as the original creature, but its statistics are modified as follows:
  • Its size is Tiny.
  • Its hit points are equal to + your spellcasting ability modifier + the amount by which you exceeded the DC.
  • Its attack and damage rolls use your spellcasting ability modifier instead of the original creature’s modifier.
  • Its saving throws and skill checks are reduced by 2.
  • It has no legendary actions or resistances.
  • It cannot use spells or abilities that are more powerful than a 2nd level spell. The DM determines which spells or abilities are too powerful for the creature to use.
  • Its attacks and abilities are limited to dealing damage plus your spellcasting ability modifier.
  • You can use a bonus action to command the creature verbally. You can also use an action to dismiss the creature, causing it to vanish and leave behind a small painting of itself.

Painted Remains

If the creature is reduced to 0 hit points, it also vanishes and leaves behind a painting. If the creature is more than 60 feet away from you at the end of your turn, it vanishes and leaves behind a painting. If you are incapacitated or die, the creature acts independently until it vanishes.

Lore

The Eldritch Paintbrush is a rare and powerful magical item that has been sought after by artists and wizards alike for centuries. It is said to have been created by a powerful wizard who was also an accomplished painter. The wizard’s name was Tia the Magnificent, and she was known throughout the land for her incredible paintings. She was a master of her craft, and her works were said to be so lifelike that they could almost be mistaken for the real thing. But Tia was not content with simply painting pictures. She wanted to bring her creations to life, to make them real in a way that no other artist had ever done before.
For years, Tia studied the art of conjuration magic, delving deep into ancient tomes and scrolls in search of the knowledge she needed to create her masterpiece. And finally, after many long years of study and experimentation, she succeeded. She created the Eldritch Paintbrush, a magical tool that could bring any creature that an artist had seen to life as a Tiny construct.
The paintbrush was made using forbidden magic in an eldritch dungeon, deep beneath the earth where few dared to venture. Tia risked everything to create her masterpiece, and it is said that she paid a terrible price for her ambition. Some say that she was cursed by the very magic she sought to control, and that she was consumed by her own creations.
