In the bustling heart of the city, where vendors of all sorts hawked their wares in a cacophony of voices and colors, an adventurer named Rurik wandered through the market square. He was a seasoned warrior, his armor battered but well-maintained, his coin purse heavy from his latest quest. His eyes, however, were searching for something more than simple provisions.
Rurik's gaze settled on a peculiar stall at the edge of the market, manned by what appeared to be a scrawny dragonborn in a trench coat. The dragonborn's eyes glinted with an odd mixture of cunning and desperation, and his stall was cluttered with an assortment of trinkets and baubles, each claiming to possess some magical property."Greetings, traveler," the dragonborn rasped, his voice unexpectedly high-pitched. "Looking for something... special?"
Rurik raised an eyebrow. "What do you have?"
With a flourish, the dragonborn produced an elegantly crafted compass encased in polished brass. Intricate etchings adorned its rim, and the glass cover, clear and sturdy, protected a delicate needle within. The compass gave off a subtle, shimmering glow, hinting at the divination magic imbued within it.
"This," the vendor declared, "is a Magic Item Compass. It will point you to the nearest magic item, no matter where it is."
Rurik's skepticism was palpable. "How do I know it's not a fake?"
The dragonborn’s smile widened, showing too many sharp teeth. "Feel free to verify it yourself, good sir."
Rurik cast detect magic, his eyes narrowing as the compass emitted a genuine aura of divination. He followed up with identify, confirming the compass’s properties. It was, indeed, a real magic item. The price, however, was steep.
"Alright," Rurik said, his curiosity piqued and his greed taking hold. "I’ll take it."
Coins exchanged hands, and Rurik walked away, a hefty sum lighter but with the promise of future riches. As he exited the market, he couldn't help but imagine the treasures he would uncover with the compass’s aid.
However, when Rurik attempted to use the compass, the needle spun erratically, never settling on a fixed point. Frustration boiled within him as he realized the device was useless for its intended purpose. Determined to get his money back, he stormed back to the vendor’s stall.
The market was winding down for the day, and the dragonborn was hurriedly packing away his wares. Rurik’s approach was met with wide, anxious eyes. The dragonborn seemed to freeze for a split second before abandoning the cart altogether, sprinting away down a narrow alley.
"Hey! Get back here!" Rurik shouted, giving chase.
As he rounded the corner, he found the alley empty, save for three kobolds engaged in what appeared to be an intense game of dice. They glanced up at Rurik with wide, innocent eyes, their activities seeming utterly mundane.
Rurik's eyes narrowed as he scanned the area, but the dragonborn was nowhere to be seen. The kobolds, oblivious to his plight, continued their game, leaving Rurik to stew in the realization that he had been outwitted.
