Zara's Wrath
Illustration: Timmmi (using AI-tools like Midjourney & Dall-E)

This sword was forged by Zara, the scorned heir of the Nine Hells. She imbued it with her malice and fury, and used it to slay countless foes in her quest for vengeance. The sword is a gnarly blade of black metal, with jagged edges and runes of infernal power. It radiates heat and emits a low growl when drawn.

Magical attacks

You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Fiendish Resilience

While you are attuned to this sword you have resistance to fire damage.

Hellfire Blade

As a bonus action, you can set the sword on fire with hellish flames. While the sword is on fire, it deals an extra fire damage and necrotic damage to any target it hits. The hellfire also produces bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for another 10 feet, and it can pierce through magical darkness created by spells of 6th level or lower. The fire lasts until you use a bonus action to put it out. You can use this feature only once per short or long rest.

Random properties

Zara's Wrath has the following random properties in it's dormant state.
  • 1 minor beneficial property
  • 1 minor detrimental property
See “Artifact Properties” in chapter 7 of the Dungeon Master’s Guide for more information.

Sentience

Zara’s Wrath is a sentient chaotic evil weapon with an Intelligence of 16, a Wisdom of 14, and a Charisma of 20. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet.
The weapon communicates telepathically with its wielder and can speak, read, and understand Infernal and Common. It also understands every language you know.
While you are attuned to this weapon, Zara’s Wrath also acts as a ring of mind shielding, and it can’t be targeted by any divination magic or perceived through magical scrying sensors.

Personality

Zara’s Wrath is driven by hatred and revenge. It urges its wielder to seek out and destroy those who have wronged them or Zara, and shows contempt for any mercy or compassion. It is loyal to Zara, but will not hesitate to betray its wielder if they prove unworthy of her legacy.
Zara’s Wrath has a fierce temper and a cruel sense of humor. It enjoys inflicting pain and suffering on its enemies, and often taunts them with insults and threats. It respects strength and courage, but despises weakness and fear.
Zara’s Wrath’s purpose is to serve as Zara’s instrument of vengeance against her father Asmodeus, who banished her from the Nine Hells for her rebellion. It seeks to find a worthy wielder who can help Zara reclaim her rightful place as the ruler of hell.
If you are friendly with Zara or share her goals, the sword will be a powerful ally and guide. If you are hostile to Zara or oppose her plans, the sword can be a dangerous enemy and rival.
The sword’s special purpose is to slay Asmodeus and anyone who serves him. The sword will do anything in its power to achieve this goal, even if it means sacrificing its wielder or itself.

Destroying the sword

The sword can only be destroyed by being bathed in the blood of Sune, the goddess of love and beauty, and Zara’s mother. The sword must be taken to Sune’s celestial realm and used to stab her in the heart, causing her blood to spill over the blade. This will cause the sword to shatter and release a blast of hellfire that damages everything within 100 feet. Each in the area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking necrotic damage and fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
This act of matricide will also have dire consequences for the wielder of the sword and the balance of the cosmos.

Zara's Duality

If you are attuned to both Zara’s Wrath and Zara’s Grace, you gain the following benefits and drawbacks:
  • After each long rest, you must roll . On a 1-3, your alignment is chaotic evil. On a 4-6, your alignment is chaotic good. On a 7-10, you retain your character’s alignment.
  • You are immune to being charmed or frightened by celestials or fiends.
  • You gain the following flaw: “I struggle to tell the difference between good and evil, and I often act on impulse or emotion.”
  • You gain a form of permanent madness from the DMG (roll on the Indefinite Madness table). This madness reflects Zara’s influence on your mind and soul.
  • Your Limited Immortality feature now grants you resistance to all damage.
