Homebrew Artificer subclass for D&D 5e
An artificer who specializes in gemology is fascinated by the magical properties of precious stones. They use their knowledge and skill to craft and infuse gems with various effects, enhancing their spells and abilities. A gemologist always carries a collection of gems with them, ready to unleash their power at a moment's notice.
Tool Proficiency#
3rd-level Gemologist feature.When you choose this subclass at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with jeweler's tools. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan’s tools of your choice. You also learn how to use gems as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells.Bonded Gem#
3rd-level Gemologist feature.As a gemologist, you can spend time and resources to cut a gemstone into a spellcasting focus and form a bond with it. This process takes one hour. You can have one bonded gem at a time. Crafting a gemstone focus grants these three-tier benefits: a bonus to spells cast, a passive benefit from the bond with the gem, and a powerful effect that can be unleashed by destroying the gem. When crafting a gem focus, choose from a variety of gem types, each with unique benefits.Each gemstone used for crafting a focus must have a minimum gold value of at least 50 gold pieces per spell level of the maximum spell that can be cast with it (50 gold pieces for 1st-level spells, 200 gold pieces for 4th level spells etc.).
Ruby
- Bonus: You can add your Intelligence modifier (minimum +1) to the damage rolls of your spells using this focus.
- Passive Benefit: Resistance to fire damage.
- Crushing Effect: Unleash a burst of fiery energy in a 15-foot radius, dealing fire damage equal to four times your artificer level to all creatures in the area. You are immune to this damage.
- Bonus: Doubled range for spells cast using the focus.
- Passive Benefit: Advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.
- Crushing Effect: Create a 30-foot cube of illusory terrain, providing three-quarters cover to allies within the cube. The illusion lasts for 1 minute.
- Bonus: When you cast a spell that deals a type of damage from the following list using the focus, you can change that damage type to one of the other listed types: acid, cold, fire, lightning, poison, thunder.
- Passive Benefit: You can add your Intelligence modifier (minimum +1) to Constitution saving throws that you make to maintain your concentration on a spell when you take damage.
- Crushing Effect: Surround yourself in an aura that grants all allies within 30 feet immunity to non-magical damage for rounds.
- Bonus: When you roll damage for a spell, you can reroll the spell's damage dice. You must use the new total.
- Passive Benefit: Advantage on initiative rolls.
- Crushing Effect: If the gem can be used to cast spells of 6th level or higher, you gain true sight for 1 hour. Otherwise you gain blindsight for 1 hour.
- Bonus: Gain temporary hit points equal to your artificer level when casting abjuration spells.
- Passive Benefit: Resistance to one damage type of your choice. You can change this resistance type after finishing a long rest.
- Crushing Effect: Encase all allies within 15 feet, including yourself, in an impenetrable force field for 1 round, granting them immunity to all damage while allowing them to take their turns as normal.
- Bonus: Spells cast using the opal focus have their duration doubled.
- Passive Benefit: Advantage on concentration checks.
- Crushing Effect: Activate a burst of raw magical energy, granting all allies within 30 feet temporary hit points equal to your artificer level and advantage on their next attack roll or ability check within the next minute.
Gem Infusion#
5th-level Gemologist feature.At 5th level, you can infuse magic items with the power of gems, granting them additional properties. At the end of a long rest, you can imbue one or more items with gems in your posession. You can infuse for yourself or allies, and you can have a number of gem-infused items equal to your proficiency bonus at a time. Each infusion can only be on one item, and no item can have more than one infusion. If you exceed your maximum, the oldest infusion is replaced.- Diamond: The item grants you resistance to one type of damage of your choice while you are wearing or carrying it.
- Emerald: The item grants you a +1 bonus to saving throws while you are attuned to it.
- Ruby: The item deals an extra fire damage when you hit with it.
- Sapphire: The item grants you a +1 bonus to spell attack rolls and spell save DCs while you are attuned to it.
- Topaz: The item grants you advantage on initiative checks while you are wearing or carrying it.
- Opal: The item's weight is reduced to one-tenth, becoming exceptionally light without losing its durability or effectiveness.
Gem Consumption#
9th-level Gemologist feature.At 9th level, you learn how to consume gems or gem dust as an additional material component for your spells, unleashing their latent magic. Whenever you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, you can add a gem or gem dust worth at least 25 gp per level of the spell as a material component. Doing so grants you one of the following benefits, depending on the type of gem you use:- Diamond. The spell ignores any damage resistance.
- Emerald. The spell grants you or one creature of your choice within 30 feet of you temporary hit points equal to twice the spell's level.
- Ruby. The spell deals additional fire damage equal to the spell's level times your Intelligence modifier to one target of your choice.
- Sapphire. The spell grants you or one creature of your choice within 30 feet of you a bonus to AC equal to your Intelligence modifier until the start of your next turn.
- Opal. You can shield a number of creatures equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of 1) from the harmful effects of the spell. The chosen creatures automatically succeed on their saving throws against the spell, and they take no damage if they would normally take half damage on a successful save.
- Topaz. The spell imposes disadvantage on the saving throw of one creature of your choice.
Gem Master's Bond#
15th-level Gemologist feature.You can now maintain a dual bond with two gem spell focuses simultaneously, allowing for greater versatility in your spellcasting. When casting a spell using your bonded gems, you can choose which focus to utilize.Gem Convergence#
15th-level Gemologist feature.When you cast a spell of 1st level or higher you can choose to channel it through both your bonded gems, gaining the effect of both spell focuses.You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum once) and regain all uses after a long rest.
