Portable Pit

wondrous item, rare

This item appears as a small, almost flat barrel with a lid attached to the side by a small chain.

Activating the pit

When you place the barrel on the ground and remove the lid, the barrel expands into a circular pit that is up to 20 feet in diameter and up to 60 feet deep. The pit can hold up to 1000 pounds of weight. Anything heavier than that causes the pit to collapse and return to its barrel form, ejecting any contents
You can choose how deep and wide it is, as long as it fits within the limits of the item and the available space where it's placed. You can also choose whether the bottom of the pit is flat or spiked. If spiked, any creature that falls into the pit takes piercing damage for every 10 feet it fell, in addition to the normal falling damage.

Disguised

The pit is designed to be used as a trap. When activated, it disguises itself with illusion magic to blend in with its surroundings. A creature can use an action to investigate the area where the pit is located. The creature notices the pit if it succeeds on a DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) check.

Deactivate the pit

You can use an action to speak a command word and return the pit to its barrel form. Anything inside the pit is ejected to the nearest unoccupied space.
