Storm Gauntlets

wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)

Storm Gauntlets

The storm gauntlets are made of sturdy metal, with brass studs along the fingers and palms. The gauntlets emit a faint humming sound and occasional sparks of electricity, especially when the wearer clenches their fists or strikes an enemy.

Lightning Strike

When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike while wearing these gauntlets, you can deal an extra lightning damage to the target.

Shockwave

The gauntlets have 3 charges. You can use a bonus action to expend 1 charge and create a shockwave that pushes away creatures within 10 feet of you. Each creature in the area must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet away from you and knocked prone. The gauntlets regain all expended charges daily at dawn.

Lightning Rod

Whenever you take lightning damage while wearing the gauntlets, you can use your reaction to ground the current, giving you resistance to that damage and the gauntlets regain 1 charge. If you try to absorb lightning damage when the gauntlets have 3 charges, you must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take thunder damage and be stunned until the end of your next turn, as the gauntlets overload with energy.

Lore

In the labyrinthine city of Eldergrove, there lived an inventor whose heart danced with the crackling energy of lightning itself. This tinkerer, known only as Riven, was a recluse, often seen wandering the outskirts of the city, his eyes fixated on the thunderous storms that brewed atop the distant mountains.
Riven was an enigma, a solitary figure whose workshop, tucked away amidst the tangled roots of an ancient oak, crackled and hummed with a symphony of sparking coils and whirring machinery. His obsession with electricity bordered on reverence; he saw it as nature's most primal force, an untamed power begging to be harnessed.
Driven by an insatiable curiosity and a relentless desire to channel the raw might of lightning, Riven delved into forbidden tomes and spent countless sleepless nights amidst his contraptions. With each failed experiment, his determination only grew stronger.
The genesis of the Storm gauntlets was an amalgamation of Riven's unwavering obsession and relentless pursuit of mastery over lightning. Tirelessly crafting, refining, and infusing his creations with the very essence of stormy tempests, he birthed the gauntlets, forged from the heart of a long-forgotten lightning strike.
It wasn’t merely a quest for power that fueled Riven’s creations; it was an innate desire to protect. The city he shunned was still dear to him, and he foresaw threats looming in the horizon, dangers that couldn’t be thwarted by conventional means. He envisioned guardians empowered by lightning itself, defenders capable of wielding nature’s fury against any encroaching darkness.
The Storm gauntlets were a testament to his ingenuity and obsession. Infused with the essence of lightning and crafted with meticulous precision, they crackled with an energy that mirrored Riven's passion. Each surge and spark within them held a fraction of his unyielding determination.
However, Riven's ultimate fate remains a mystery. Whispers spoke of a raging storm, a night where lightning danced across the heavens in a cacophony of wrath. Some claimed he sought to commune with the very storms he worshipped, disappearing amidst the lightning's embrace. Others said he ascended, transformed into a being of pure electricity, forever merging his essence with the storm he so revered.
The Storm gauntlets, abandoned in his sanctuary, held both his legacy and the key to wielding the untamed might he had so fervently pursued. Whether as a boon or a curse, they awaited a worthy soul to claim them, bearing witness to the fervor and passion of an inventor whose spirit remained entwined with every surge of their lightning.
