Shadowfell Blade

weapon (greatsword), artifact (requires attunement)

Shadowfell Blade

The Shadowfell Blade is a fearsome weapon to behold. Its hilt is made from iron from the Shadowfell, and its blade is made from shadow. The blade itself seems to absorb light and cast a shadow around it, making it difficult to see in low light conditions. The sword's pommel is adorned with a black gemstone that seems to pulse with dark energy. The weapon exudes an aura of malevolence that can be felt by those nearby.

Shadow Blade

The blade of the sword is made from pure shadow making it much lighter than a normal greatsword. The weapon has the finesse property in addition to heavy and two-handed.

Magic Weapon

You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Life Eater

When you hit a creature with this weapon, it deals necrotic damage instead of the usual slashing damage.
Creatures hit by the blade have their hit point maximum reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage dealt. This reduction lasts until the creature finishes a long rest.

Shadow strike

When you are in dim light or darkness attacks with this weapon are made with advantage.
Also attacks with this weapon score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.

Shadowfall

Once per short rest, you can use an action to activate the Shadowfell Blade. When you do so, you plunge the sword into the ground and utter a command word in Abyssal. The sword then emits a wave of dark energy that spreads out in a 30-foot radius around you. All creatures within range must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 20) or become frightened of you for 1 minute. While frightened in this way, creatures are also vulnerable to necrotic damage. After using this feature, you take necrotic damage for each creature affected by it.

Attunement

Attuning to this item has a cost: your hit point maximum is reduced by twice your level. Any creature who attunes to this weapon is considered proficient with it.

Lore

The Shadowfell Blade is a weapon of great power, forged in the Shadowfell by a powerful lich who sought to create the ultimate weapon of destruction. The lich imbued the sword with dark magic, allowing it to absorb the life force of those it struck. The blade was used to great effect in the lich's conquests, and it is said that entire armies fell before it.
After the lich's defeat, the sword was lost for centuries until it was discovered by a group of adventurers who were exploring the ruins of an ancient temple. The sword was found buried deep beneath the temple, and it was said that it was guarded by a powerful undead creature.
The adventurers who found the sword were never seen again, and it is said that they were consumed by the sword's malevolent power. Since then, the sword has passed through many hands, each time leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake.
Despite its dark history, many adventurers still seek out the Shadowfell Blade, hoping to harness its power for their own purposes. Some say that the sword has a will of its own and that it seeks out those who are worthy of wielding it. Others say that the sword is cursed and that those who wield it are doomed to an early death.
The Shadowfell itself is a plane of existence in various cosmological models. It is also known as the Plane of Shadow and is home to shadows, dread, and dark feelings of life. To wander through this plane is to risk losing oneself in misery and apathy.
